Pacific Woodtech is a Plywood and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL or Engineered Lumber) plant located in Golden. At 302 members, LP Golden is the biggest certification in Local 1-405.
Pacific Woodtech LVL/Plywood was originally a pole mill built in the 1940's at Golden Poles Ltd. Renamed Golden Lumber, the mill was sold to an American firm and renamed Kicking Horse Forest Products in 1960 and expanded the product line into veneer and plywood.
In 1969 Evans Forest Products bought the mill as well as Selkirk Spruce Mills in Donald, BC, just north of Golden. Following economic difficulties in the late 1980's and early 1990's, the Donald mill was closed and the Plywood/LVL plant survived as a product of the then NDP BC Government, Evans Forest Products, the IWA along with various stakeholders worked together to ensure the plant's survival. In 1999 it was then sold to Louisiana Pacific.
For the first time since the mid-1980's, LP Golden has joined the IFLRA (Interior Forest Labour Relations Association) and will bargain as an association with USW. Historically LP Golden has been an independent mill.
